?

Do I need sensors?

Most drivers don't. Every unit logs laps, sectors, GPS speed and RPM straight out of the box.

If you want one extra reading it's usually water temp (Rotax, X30 and other water-cooled engines) or exhaust temp (EGT) for carb tuning. One sensor: Legend or 1T. Both: 2T.

Sensors around the kart

Tap a point on the kart to see what each sensor does and where it fits.

FRONT REAR Steering Pedals Wheel speed EGT Water temp Head temp Tyres Lambda Hub box

Adding more than one or two sensors? You'll need an expansion box. The Alfano 7 takes RPM, GPS, one wheel speed sensor, its temperature channel(s), the wideband lambda kit and every wireless sensor directly. Steering and pedal sensors plug into a Box4Move (steering, throttle, brake) or a Box12; brake pressure, a second speed sensor and extra temperatures need the Box12. Both boxes have a built-in G-force sensor. Full sensor guide below ↓

NTC or K-type? Every temperature sensor is either NTC or K-type and needs the matching patch lead. Each sensor page shows exactly which lead to add.

Beyond lap times

What your Alfano can really measure

Most Alfano owners use it as a lap timer. Add sensors and the same unit tells you about gearing, jetting, tyre pressures, braking, steering and grip – and the free ADA app shows it on your phone before the next session. Here is everything it can do, what each sensor shows you and what it costs to add.

Sensor guide

Every sensor – what it does and what you'll see

Filter by what you want to improve. Every card shows where the sensor fits, which units it works with, what the data looks like in the software and what it tells you.

RPM
Engine

RPMA1600

Engine revs, logged every lap – the most useful channel after lap time.

Built inLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: the included lead clips round the HT (spark plug) lead. Coil-on-plug or 4-stroke ignitions that the lead can't read use the A451 RPM amplifier.

What you see in the software

RPM trace against the track map, top and minimum revs each lap, time spent in each 1,000 rpm band, and an RPM histogram in ADA. The Alfano 7 LED bar doubles as a shift light.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Gearing – top revs at the end of the longest straight and minimum revs in the slowest corner tell you whether to go up or down a tooth
  • Power band – see if the engine is working where it makes power, or bogging out of hairpins
  • Gear display – on shifter karts the Alfano 7 learns each gear from the RPM-to-speed ratio – no gear sensor needed
Water temperature
Engine

Water temperatureA2101 / A2111 (NTC)

Coolant temperature on Rotax, X30 and other water-cooled engines.

Plugs straight inLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: screws into the head outlet, or sits in the radiator hose using a hose adapter (17, 19, 22 or 26 mm). NTC sensors need the NTC patch lead; K-type versions need the K-type lead.

What you see in the software

Temperature trace around the lap with max and min per lap. On the Alfano 7 two alarm LEDs warn you on track with separate high and low limits.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Radiator tape – know exactly how much to blank off before the next session instead of guessing
  • Overheating – spot it in a slipstream train before it costs you power – or a piston
  • Too cold – see when a wet or cold morning leaves the engine out of its window
Cylinder head (spark plug) temp
Engine

Cylinder head (spark plug) tempA2104 / A2114 NTC · K-type 14 mm

Head temperature from a ring under the spark plug – the go-to reading for air-cooled engines.

Plugs straight inLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: a washer under the spark plug. 14 mm suits Honda, TKM, Comer and most 2-stroke kart engines; 12 mm and 10 mm are available to order.

What you see in the software

Head temperature trace, max/min per lap and the same on-track alarm LEDs as water temp.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Air-cooled engines – the only way to see engine temperature on Honda, TKM and Comer
  • Engine load – reacts faster than water temp, so you see a lean or overworked engine sooner
Exhaust gas temperature (EGT)
Engine

Exhaust gas temperature (EGT)A2151 K-type PRO

Exhaust gas temperature in the header – the classic carb-tuning reading.

Plugs straight inLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: a boss welded into the exhaust header (locating nut A272A; blanking cap A272B for when the sensor is off). K-type – needs the K-type patch lead.

What you see in the software

EGT trace around the lap, max/min per lap, and an EGT mode on the Alfano 7 LED bar with colour thresholds you set.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Jetting – max EGT on the straight rising = going leaner, falling = going richer. Change one thing, run again, compare
  • Seizure warning – see a lean condition building before it becomes a nipped piston
  • Needle position – compare runs on the same day to find the setting that makes power without running hot
Wideband lambda (air/fuel ratio)
Engine

Wideband lambda (air/fuel ratio)A2502 pack · Bosch LSU 4.9

The actual air/fuel mixture the engine is burning, right through the rev range.

Plugs straight inLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: a stainless boss welded into the exhaust. On the Alfano 7 it plugs straight into the BUS port (or into a Box12). Needs a 12 V supply. Not for the Legend or Alfano 6.

What you see in the software

Lambda trace in ADA PRO, a lambda widget on the dash, and a lambda mode on the LED bar: green at 0.98–1.02, yellow slightly off, red when well rich or lean.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Carb set-up – see if you're rich at the bottom and lean at the top – something EGT alone can't show
  • Weather changes – re-jet for air density with numbers, not feel
  • Best with EGT – lambda shows the mixture, EGT shows the heat – together they are the pro tuning set-up
Wheel speed sensor
Speed & timing

Wheel speed sensorA2203

Wheel speed from magnets on an axle ring – sharper than GPS and works anywhere.

Plugs straight inLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: sensor on a bracket beside a magnet ring on the rear axle (50 mm ring with 4 magnets gives 4× faster response; adapters for 40, 30 and 25 mm). The Alfano 7 takes one directly – front + rear together needs a Box12.

What you see in the software

A cleaner speed trace (logged at up to 50 Hz) laid over GPS speed, minimum corner speeds on the map, and with two sensors a front vs rear comparison.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Minimum corner speed – the number that really decides lap time – compare it corner by corner with your best lap
  • Wheelspin & hop – rear speed jumping above front on corner exit
  • Lock-ups – rear speed collapsing under braking against GPS or front speed
Magnetic & infrared lap beacons
Speed & timing

Magnetic & infrared lap beaconsA1302 / A1303 magnetic · IR receiver

Laps and splits triggered by the track's timing loops or a trackside IR transmitter instead of GPS.

Plugs straight inLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: the magnetic sensor sits under the kart and reads the timing strips buried in the track (up to 6 strips for splits). Useful indoors or where GPS is poor.

What you see in the software

Lap and split times that line up with official timing, in the same lap tables and sector views as GPS timing.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Official-loop accuracy – your times match the timing screen exactly
  • Indoor & covered tracks – lap timing where GPS can't reach
Wireless tyre pressure & temperature
Tyres & brakes

Wireless tyre pressure & temperatureA1220-5i (kart) · 12i · 17i

Live pressure (±0.02 bar) and air temperature (±1 °C) from a sensor inside each tyre.

WirelessLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: strapped round the rim inside the tyre with Alfano clamps and crimping pliers. The Alfano 7 manages 8 sensors as two sets (A and B) and recognises which set is fitted after a wheel change. Replaceable battery.

What you see in the software

Hold a button on the Alfano 7 to see live pressures and temperatures for every tyre; ADA PRO shows pressure and temperature traces over the whole session.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Hot pressure – set cold pressures so the tyres reach your target hot pressure – no more guessing in parc fermé
  • Warm-up – how many laps before the tyres are in the window
  • Balance – left vs right and front vs rear tell you how the chassis is loading the tyres
Wireless infrared tyre surface temp
Tyres & brakes

Wireless infrared tyre surface tempA1221

Tyre surface temperature at 10 Hz from an infrared sensor aimed at each tyre.

WirelessLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: on a bracket at each corner, pointing at the tread (set of 4 brackets or single corners). Up to 4 per unit. Replaceable battery and lens.

What you see in the software

Four surface temperature traces over the lap and stint, live on the dash and in ADA PRO.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Which tyre is working hardest – an overworked corner shows straight away
  • Drop-off – surface temps falling in the second half of a stint show the tyre is past its best
  • Set-up changes – see if a track width or seat change actually moved the load
Wireless brake disc temperature
Tyres & brakes

Wireless brake disc temperatureA1223

Brake disc temperature from an infrared sensor built for high heat.

WirelessLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: on a bracket aimed at the disc. Wireless to the Alfano 7 – no cables to route.

What you see in the software

Disc temperature over the stint, lap by lap.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Brake cooling – see if the disc keeps climbing through a race
  • Consistency – a disc that runs away late in the race means a brake pedal that changes under you
Wireless track (asphalt) temperature
Tyres & brakes

Wireless track (asphalt) temperatureA1224

Track surface temperature all the way round the lap, from a sensor under the kart floor.

WirelessLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: supplied bracket under the floor tray, pointing down at the track.

What you see in the software

Track temperature logged with every session so you can compare days, heats and finals.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Grip vs temperature – link pressure and grip changes to what the track actually did
  • Final-day decisions – set pressures for a hotter or cooler final using real numbers from the heats
TyreControl Junior 2 gauge
Tyres & brakes

TyreControl Junior 2 gaugeA1981

Digital tyre gauge (0–7 bar) that stores up to 100 pressure sets.

WirelessLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Works with: on its own in the paddock, and with recent Alfano 7 firmware it pairs wirelessly so the pressures you set are saved with that session's data.

What you see in the software

The cold pressures you started on, stored alongside the lap data they produced.

What it tells you

  • Cold vs hot – finally link the pressure you set to the lap times and hot pressures you got
Steering angle
Driver inputs

Steering angleA2401

How much steering lock the driver uses at every point on the lap.

Needs Box4Move or Box12Legend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: a string sensor on a bracket beside the steering column, calibrated at full left, centre and full right. Plugs into a Box4Move or Box12.

What you see in the software

Steering trace from −50% to +50% overlaid lap against lap or driver against driver.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Understeer – more lock than your reference lap at the same speed means the front isn't gripping
  • Oversteer – quick opposite-lock spikes mid-corner show a loose rear
  • Smooth hands – see if a driver is sawing at the wheel and scrubbing speed
Throttle & brake pedal position
Driver inputs

Throttle & brake pedal positionA2405

Exactly when and how far each pedal is pressed – fit one per pedal.

Needs Box4Move or Box12Legend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: a Hall-effect sensor with a magnet on the pedal. Brake calibrates 0–80% (room for pad wear), throttle 0–100%. Plugs into a Box4Move or Box12.

What you see in the software

Throttle % and brake % traces, plus dash widgets. Overlay them with a faster driver to see every difference in inputs.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Full-throttle % – the simplest measure of commitment in fast corners
  • Braking points – where braking starts, lap after lap
  • Overlap – throttle and brake together (left-foot braking) – when it helps and when it costs time
Brake pressure
Driver inputs

Brake pressureA2810 · 0–60 bar

Hydraulic pressure in the brake line – how hard the driver is actually braking.

Needs Box12Legend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: into the brake line using a T-piece or fitting to suit your kart (M10×1 thread). Plugs into the Box12; 120 cm extension available.

What you see in the software

Brake pressure traces overlaid lap on lap in ADA PRO – braking point, peak and release all visible.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Braking consistency – see if the braking point moves around lap to lap
  • Peak pressure – compare with wheel speed to find the limit before lock-up
  • Release – how smoothly the driver comes off the brake into the corner (trail braking)
G-force (lateral & braking)
Driver inputs

G-force (lateral & braking)Built into Box4Move / Box12

Cornering and braking/acceleration G from a 3-axis sensor inside the expansion box.

Expansion boxLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Fits: nothing extra – mount the Box4Move or Box12 flat and square to the kart and the G channels switch on.

What you see in the software

Lateral and longitudinal G on the lap graph and a G-force comparison between laps in ADA PRO.

Illustration of the kind of trace you get – not real session data.

What it tells you

  • Grip – peak lateral G shows how much the kart is holding in each corner
  • Braking – peak braking G without locking up
  • Driving style – a round “friction circle” means a driver blending braking into turning
Box12 expansion box
Expansion

Box12 expansion boxA1160

Turns an Alfano 7 into a full team-level logger – up to 17 extra channels.

Expansion boxLegend Alfano 7 1T Alfano 7 2T

Inputs: 4 speed sensors · 4 temperatures (2 NTC + 2 K) · lambda · brake pressure · 2 pedals · steering · exhaust valve · a universal 0–5 V input · built-in 3-axis G sensor. Connects to the unit with the A4530 cable.

Box4Move is the smaller option for steering, throttle and brake with the same built-in G sensor – ask us.

What you see in the software

Every extra channel appears in ADA PRO alongside the Alfano 7's own data – one session, one file.

What it tells you

  • Two of the same – run two water temps or two EGTs, or front and rear wheel speed
  • Any 0–5 V sensor – the universal input takes other analogue sensors via the A3406 cable
  • Future-proof – start with one sensor and add the rest over a season

Find the time

Where's my lap time going?

Real problems from the paddock, and the sensors that answer them.

Bogging out of the hairpin but banging the limiter on the straight RPM + wheel speed

Check minimum revs in the slowest corner and top revs at the end of the longest straight. If you can't have both, the gearing is wrong for the track – or the driver is over-slowing the hairpin. Compare minimum speed with your best lap.

RPM sensor →
Fast on lap 3, slow by lap 10 Wireless tyre pressure + IR tyre temp

Watch hot pressures climb past the target and surface temps drop off in the second half. Start lower on cold pressure and re-check – the TJR2 gauge saves what you set with the session.

Tyre sensors →
Engine feels flat and I'm scared of seizing EGT + wideband lambda

EGT tells you the heat, lambda tells you the mixture. Rising max EGT and a lean lambda at the top of the revs means richen up before it nips.

EGT & lambda →
My teammate is 0.3 s quicker and I don't know where Lap overlay + speed + pedals

Overlay both laps in ADA. The predictive gap shows the corner; speed shows who carries more; throttle and brake show who brakes later and gets back on the power sooner.

Pedal sensors →
The kart won't turn in Steering angle + G-force

More steering lock than your reference lap for the same lateral G is understeer, in numbers. Make one chassis change and check the trace moved.

Steering sensor →
Too hot in the train, too cold on the grid Water or head temp

Set the alarm LEDs to your limits, then use the lap-by-lap trace to decide exactly how much radiator tape to run.

Temperature sensors →
