Meet 10-year-old racer Sawyer Henderson! Already making waves in karting with impressive results and awards. Read about his journey, ambitions, and key moments.

In this edition of the KKC Karting Driver Interview Series, we’re excited to introduce 10-year-old racer, Sawyer Henderson. Though still early in his career, Sawyer has already made a strong impression on the karting scene with impressive results and an award that has his name alongside some of the best in motorsport. We caught up with Sawyer to find out more about his racing journey, ambitions, and the key moments that have shaped his experience so far.

How Sawyer Got Into Karting

Sawyer's karting journey began at the age of seven. “I started doing Young Starz at Red Lodge Karting track, and in 2024, I started racing competitively at Kimbolton,” Sawyer explains. “I’ve always loved cars, and as soon as I was old enough, I got into a kart. It felt like the natural next step.”

Achievements and Progress

In his first year racing in the Hunts Kart Championship, Sawyer finished 5th in the standings. This year, he’s leading the championship and has already secured several heat wins and podium finishes. “I’m really happy with how the HKRC Championship is going so far, but I know there’s still a long way to go and plenty of tough competition,” Sawyer says.

One of his standout achievements came last year when he was awarded the prestigious Mark Hines Award at the Kimbolton Awards night. This award is given to young racers with potential, and Sawyer now shares the trophy with some big names, including Lewis Hamilton, who won the award in 1995. “Winning the Mark Hines Award was a huge honour,” Sawyer reflects. “To have my name on that trophy alongside such famous drivers is something I’m really proud of.”

Looking Ahead to 2025

As the 2025 season unfolds, Sawyer is most excited about competing in his first national championship in the CKC. “I’m looking forward to racing at new tracks around the country and going up against some of the best drivers in my class,” he says. “It’s going to be a real challenge, but I’m ready for it.”

Sawyer is also focused on improving his racecraft this season. “I’m working on gaining more seat time, especially in the CKC, and learning as much as I can from the experience. Every race teaches me something new,” he says.

Favourite Tracks

When it comes to favourite tracks, Sawyer loves Whilton Mill for its fast-flowing corners but holds Kimbolton close to his heart. “Kimbolton is where I won my first race, so it will always be special to me,” he explains. “But Whilton Mill is definitely one of my favourite tracks because of its challenging corners and layout.”

Motorsport Inspiration

Sawyer looks up to Lewis Hamilton for his journey from humble beginnings to achieving success on the world stage. “Lewis Hamilton is a massive inspiration to me,” Sawyer says. “He came from very little, and look where he is now. I feel like we share some similarities in that sense – we don’t have a lot, but I’m determined to make the most of what I’ve got.”

Best Racing Moment So Far

One of Sawyer’s best moments came when he made a crucial move on the last lap to win his first race. “That was a great feeling – making that move on the last lap and crossing the line to win my first race,” he recalls. “My goal now is to win the HKRC Championship and finish in the top 10 in the CKC Championship.”

Pre-Race Rituals

Sawyer has a fun and quirky pre-race ritual with his dad. “Before every race at Kimbolton, my dad and I always sing a little chant to the tune of the Um-Bongo advert,” Sawyer shares. “It’s a bit silly, but it’s become something we always do. If we don’t do it, it feels like bad luck!”

Advice for Young Drivers

For young drivers just starting out in karting, Sawyer has some solid advice: “Keep focused and don’t get upset if things go wrong. Mistakes happen, but the most important thing is to stay calm, learn from them, and not drive angry.”

Sawyer’s Team and Sponsors

Sawyer races for Rob Sore Racing (RSR), a team that has supported him from the start. He’s also sponsored by family members and M and L Roofing, and he’s actively searching for new sponsorships to help fund his racing. “I’m always doing what I can to fund my racing,” Sawyer says. “Every bit of support helps.”

Looking Forward

With a promising future ahead, Sawyer Henderson is a young driver to watch. His dedication, determination, and impressive results make it clear that he has a bright future in karting. We’re excited to see where his journey takes him in the years to come.
