How to Find the Right Chain Size for Your Go-Kart: A Quick Guide

Selecting the correct chain size for your go-kart is essential to ensure smooth performance and avoid potential issues on the track. If you're unsure where to start, don't worry—here’s a simple, tried-and-tested method to help you calculate the right chain size for your setup and determine the chain pitch.

Understanding the Components

Your go-kart's chain links the engine sprocket (front cog) to the rear sprocket (rear cog). The chain transfers the power from the engine to the rear axle, propelling the kart forward. Too short a chain will strain the system, while a chain that's too long can cause slack, leading to misalignment or derailment.

The Formula: Rear Sprocket + Front Sprocket + 10

The easiest method to estimate the correct chain length is this straightforward formula:

Rear Sprocket Teeth + Front Sprocket Teeth + 10 = Approximate Chain Length (in links)

For example, if your rear sprocket has 85 teeth and your front sprocket has 12 teeth, you would add:

85 (rear) + 12 (front) + 10 = 107 links

This gives you an approximate chain length of 107 links. It's always a good idea to buy a slightly longer chain and then remove links as needed for a perfect fit, rather than ending up with a chain that’s too short.

Determining the Chain Pitch: #219, #420, or #428?

The pitch of the chain refers to the distance between the centres of two adjacent pins in the chain. To determine whether your kart needs a #219, #420, or #428 chain, you need to measure this pitch.

Here’s how to calculate it:

  1. Measure the Pitch: Using a vernier caliper or a ruler, measure the distance between the centres of two consecutive pins on the chain or sprocket teeth.

  2. Match the Measurement:

    • #219 Chain: The pitch is 7.774 mm (0.307 inches). It is typically used for high-performance karts because of its lighter weight and compact size.
    • #420 Chain: The pitch is 12.70 mm (0.500 inches).
    • #428 Chain: The pitch is 12.70 mm (0.500 inches), but the chain itself is slightly heavier and thicker than #420.

Once you’ve identified the pitch and chain type, you’re ready to order the appropriate chain for your go-kart.
